Content

This course gives and introduction to economic geology with an emphasis on the geological processes that leads to the formation of metal and ore mineral deposits, which are crucial for our society. The course presents and overview om various ore deposits and their relation to magmatic, metamorphic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. Furthermore, and introduction is given to the economic and environmental issues that govern mining and mineral exploration. The course also gives an introduction to the identification of ore minerals and hydrothermal alterations. Finally, the concepts of critical metals, green energy technologies, sustainability and circular economy and the importance of mining are treated.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

-An overview of the petrogenesis of various mineral deposits.

-Classification and identification of economic minerals.

-Ore deposit formation in different geological settings.

-An introduction to minerals exploration tools and mining.

-The importance of certain critical metals for green energy technology, sustainability and circular economy.

-Innovation and business development within minerals exploration and mining is introduced by industry professionals.

-Digital portals and platforms for mineral exploration and data acquisition will be presented.

 

Skills

-Identification of selected economic minerals and rocks in hand sample.

-The ability to predict where certain types of mineral deposits may occur.

-Information on the main methods used in mineral exploration and evaluation of the mineral potential of a province.

-Basic knowledge about the economic aspects related to ore minerals.

-Introduction to the use of reflected light microscopy for identification of oxides and sulfides.

 

Competences

-Knowledge about the formation of specific types of mineral deposits.

-Knowledge about the principles for mineral exploration and methods to describe and characterise ore minerals.

-Written and oral presentation of models for the formation of ore deposits based on independent literature studies.

Oral examination, 20 minutes
The written assignment is handed out two weeks before the exam week and is handed in one week before the exam week. The oral exam uses the written assignment as its point of departure. It includes the titles listed in the officially approved reading list. A combined grade is given after the oral exam. The oral exam is without preparation. At the exam the written part is weighted by 50% and the oral part is weighted by 50%. The course is passed if the combined grade is passed.
