TTEASK020U The Kierkegaard Seminar: “Readings of Fear and Trembling”
This seminar will provide an opportunity for students to look more deeply at some of the most influential themes in Kierkegaard’s authorship by focusing on one of his central works, Fear and Trembling, signed by pseudonym Johannes de silentio.
Educational aims:
This course aims to provide students with a nuanced understanding of the various themes in Fear and Trembling and to introduce students to some of the latest scholarly research on Fear and Trembling.
Preparation:
The seminar meets once a week for two hours. For each meeting, 4 hours of preparation is required. Each week, we will do a close reading of Kierkegaard’s own text and suggestions for secondary reading will be provided for each session. In addition, each seminar participant will be required to prepare one detailed discussion question based on the reading for the day.
Course literature:
Søren Kierkegaard, Fear and Trembling, trans. Alastair Hannay, Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1987.
A list of secondary readings, electronic readings as well as monographs, will be provided during the course of the semester.
