Content

The aim of the course is to provide the participants with:

i) an overview of the theory and application of technologies in genetic research of health and disease

ii) an introduction to the role of genetics in elucidating disease mechanisms and inferring causality, and

iii) an understanding of the application of technologies in epigenomic and transcriptomic research.

 

The main themes covered in the course include:

  • Phenotype definition
  • Genetic variation in health and disease
  • Methods in genome research including genome sequencing
  • Analytical methods in genome research
  • Methods and applications of epigenetic research
  • Transcriptomic methods and applications

 

This course is primarily focused on basic omics research. Translational research applications of omics are included in the later omics courses in the BRIDGE Programme.

Learning Outcome

Upon completing the course, participants should be able to:

 

Knowledge

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how genetic variation impacts health and disease.
  • Discuss the applications of contemporary methodologies to study genetic variation.
  • Have an awareness of the strengths and limitations of genetic variation in elucidating disease mechanisms and inferring causality.
  • Gain an understanding of the principles and applications of epigenomic and transcriptomic profiling of tissues and single cells.

 

Skills

  • Critically evaluate the results from studies of human genetic variation.
  • Apply basic tools to study relationships among individuals and populations using genetic data.
  • Develop an appropriate design for a genetic study of a human disease.

 

Competences

  • Understand the central concepts of genomics, epigenomics and transcriptomics, and be able to engage in informed discussions about related topics with peers, clinicians, and the public.

Participants must meet the admission criteria of the BRIDGE - Translational Excellence Programme (Fellowship or BRIDGE Omics Programme).
The course is organized with a mix of scientific seminars by invited speakers, including technical lectures about modern technologies, and participant-led activities. In addition, the course will include group work, case studies, and practical exercises.

The course will end with an evaluation where participants must reflect on course learning outcomes and give feedback for course development.
