The course aims to provide students with the kowledge and competencies necessary to understand the rationale and evidence for the design, implementation and evaluation of community-based interventions in sport, and exercise. A cross-disciplinary approach will be taken in order to provide students with a critical awareness of why interventions are employed, the evidence for their success, design and implementation of interventions in sport, exercise and healthcare settings, and insight into the rationale and methodology of evaluating intervention outcomes.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • Understand and have a critical awareness of the rationale and reported purpose of sport, exercise and healthcare interventions relating to specific populations and settings.

  • Provide a critical appreciation of the relationship between sport and exercise activity and intervention in a variety of participant groups.

  • Provide a critical appreciation of the relationship between sport and exercise activity and intervention in a variety of participant groups.

Competencies:

  • Familiarity and confidence in employing Monitoring and Evaluation methodologies.

  • Demonstrate their understanding of the subject through both academic and professional reflective practice.

  • Employ strategic planning and development planning skills in analysing, understanding and addressing the development needs and intentions of sport, exercise and health organisations and communities.

Skills:

  • Design, express and evaluate programme theory.
  • Project management.
  • Scientific report writing.

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.
Lectures, group work, exercises and discussions
The course is identical to NNEK20000U Psychology of Competitive Sports.
It is not allowed to pass both courses.

Written assignment: 3000 word evaluation protocol (Evaluation of a community programme) written during the course - graded by two internal evaluators. Accounts for 50% of the final grade.

Oral exam: 30 minute Group Presentation (including discussion) - graded by two
internal evaluators. Accounts for 50% of the final grade
