The course focus on the theoretical background for and applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. The course deals with photophysical properties of molecular systems, in particular related to UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence. Special emphasis is on: energy and electron transfer, polarization (anisotropy), and solvent effects, single molecule spectroscopy and super resolution imaging, time resolved fluorescence and transient absorption.
After having passed the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge:
Concepts of
- the interaction of light with molecules
- photo physical manifestations of the local molecular environment
- for the kinetics involved in deactivation of electronically excited states of molecules
- the basics of photo induced electron transfer
- steady-state and time-resolved anisotropy of fluorescence emission
- the principles of steady-state and time-resolved experimental techniques
- resonance energy transfer and its applications
- application of fluorescence techniques in sensors
- transient absorption
- single molecule fluorescence techniques
- super resolution fluorescence imaging
Skills:
- Apply the above mentioned knowledge for understanding and calculating photophysical properties of molecular systems.
Competences:
- Read contemporary research papers on photophysics, understand them, present them and write an self consistent essay on it.
- Joseph R. Lakowicz: "Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy", 3rd edition.
- Lecture notes.
- Selected research articles.
Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.

- Oral exam on basis of previous submission, 25 minutes (no preparation time)
