NGEA09055U Process Studies and Field Techniques

Volume 2014/2015
Education
MSc Programme in Geography and Geoinformatics
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
Content

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of some of the more advanced research methodologies and equipment used within the field of sediment transport studies. A significant part of the time is reserved for an introduction to the software program Matlab which is used for analysis of a lot of field-data. The course will include training in design of process studies and small research projects and introduce basic as well as more advanced instrumentation and field measurement techniques. The course will take its starting point in current research projects and problems and will also be planned in accordance with students’ special interests within the field.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

Transport of cohesive and non-cohesive sediments in the aquatic environment, erodibility of cohesive sediments, settling of aggregated/flocculated sediment, particle size analysis in situ using laser diffraction, measurements with ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter), basic Matlab programming.

Skills:

  • use basic and advanced research equipment used for studies of sediment transport
  • use Matlab for simple presentation and analysis of field-data
  • estimate the pros and cons and uncertainty of typical research methods and equipment

Competences:

Analyse, assess and apply results, methods, theory and data in connection with sediment transport
