During this summer school in the heart of Copenhagen, students from across the world get an opportunity to move from analysing problems in urban societies to creating possible solutions and identifying potentials in urban space by formulating and planning research-based projects.

Organized in collaboration with Strøm music festival and other partners in Copenhagen, the summer school combines academic theory with the experiences and know-how of seasoned practitioners to help the students formulate, plan and execute cultural or social projects in urban space. The aim of the course is thus to give students the tools for translating their academic skills and knowledge into concrete projects for change in cities.

During the summer school course, students immerse in theories of urban culture, the social production of space and cultural interventions in urban space. Students will be trained in identifying and discussing problems and potentials relating to culture and urban societies; formulating research-based projects for implementation; and applying knowledge about social entrepreneurship and innovation processes.

The summer school is organized around case-based learning by focusing on a specific site in Copenhagen as a laboratory for exploration. The teaching is underpinned by a do-it-yourself philosophy and a cross-cultural perspective on urban development. By means of lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and field trips, students in groups will engage with a range of actors, including cultural practitioners, activists, social entrepreneurs, municipal authorities and private businesses, as well as with urban theorists.

The course is offered through the Global Urban Studies Electives (urban.tors.ku.dk) and is open to all BA and MA-level students who will be awarded 15 ECTS upon passing the exam.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Strøm has unfortunately had to cancel their festival. Instead, we are extremely happy to announce that we will be working with Urban 13 as the main case study for this course.

Urban 13 is a social urban DIY-project, located under the Bispeengbuen highway bridge, created by three young locals that have used the space for cultural events since 2014.

As a vibrant metropolitan laboratory, URBAN 13 aims at becoming an incubator for the "small ones with the big ideas" - be it chefs, craftsmen, designers, cultural creators, or aspiring musicians. Urban 13 is committed to creating a sense of security in the local area through the establishment of local communities and daily activities and creating a new story about the bridge to make the place a natural and cozy gathering point for everyone.
