HELGA. An Introduction to Digital Humanities
Computational tools and methods for the Humanities have been used as far back as 1949, when a Jesuit scholar teamed up with IBM to study medieval Latin texts. As new technologies developed, collaborations between researchers and computer engineers increased, and the line between the two professions blurred. Soon, researchers started making their own databases, learning programming languages and using geographical information systems. Today, the term “Digital Humanities” encompasses a large set of tools and practices spanning from text encoding, data modeling and mapping to machine learning and augmented reality.

This course will explore Digital Humanities through the scope of research data management. You will learn how to collect, clean, structure, visualise and share data with a focus on reusability and durability. Each chapter in the course will introduce a new set of tools and practices that you will put to the test in hands-on exercises. These will include :

  • Collecting large datasets online
  • Cleaning large datasets automatically
  • Creating and querying relational databases
  • Structuring texts
  • Collaborating on projects online
  • Visualising and mapping data
  • Sharing your data
  • Preserving your data following the Fair Principles
  • Writing a Data Management Plan

This course is aimed at students from all disciplines at the Saxo Institute, which means we will not be focusing on a single discipline but working on a broad range of subjects.

By the end of the course, you will have an overview of the tools and methods that will help you efficiently handle, share and preserve your research data. You will also have a better understanding of the positive and negative impact digital tools can have on your research.
