Content

An introduction to Russian foreign policy in the post-Soviet years with a special focus on Russia’s relations with the West, with the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States and with major allies.

By the end of the course the student should be able to

  • Demonstrate a both broad and deep knowledge of Russian foreign policy in the post-Soviet years, including major themes and policy tools
  • Employ and critically assess key theories from International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis
  • View and analyse Russia’s foreign policy from the vantage point of alternative theories and paradigms
  • Reflect on possible continuities in Russian foreign policy, including the shadow of the past
  • Reflect on Russia’s relations with the West in particular, including the issue of identity construction

Students will be required to read a collection of book chapters and articles. These will be made available in a reader

The course builds on discussion and thus heavy student participation and involvement, including including case studies of Russian foreign policy issues.
