HNAK00028U The Archaeology of Death

Volume 2017/2018
Education

BA-tilvalg i Nærorientalsk arkæologi, 2007

Master’s Programme in Ancient and Medieval Near Eastern Studies, 2008

Content

Archaeologists often feel that they are particularly close to the past when they are dealing with the dead. This course explores the many ways in which the dead can be disposed of, thought about, and made meaningful both in the past and the present. Taking an explicitly theoretical approach, themes such as sacrifice, corporeality, emotion and commemoration will be explored. Examples are primarily drawn from Egypt and Sudan, but the development of archaeologies of death are situated within a broader historical and geopgraphical context.
