HNAK00016U Themes and topics in Near Eastern Archaeology 1: The archaeology of social life
Curriculum for the Master’s Programmes in Ancient and Medieval Near Eastern Studies, 2008
The course will deal with the archaeology of social life through different time periods. Social life is expressed in ritual and cult, social organisation and hierarchy, prestige items and craft specialisation, the way food is produced, prepared and consumed, identity is created and politics are played out.
The course will include material from the Near East and North Africa and treat the time period from Neolithic to Islamic periods. Chronologies will be briefly outlined, and thematic issues will be introduced and discussed. Relevant models and theories are part of the teaching, so that a critical analysis of the material will be achieved.
One aspect treated in some detail will be food, as an exhibition on food as part of the student’s active participation is planned.
