Gender and Sexualities in the Middle East
This course explores the construction and experience of gender and sexuality in the Middle East. Drawing on the historical, sociological and anthropological research in and on the region, the course will offer a systematic reading and an analytical discussion of the political, economic and cultural structures that inform femininity and masculinity in the region. We will first address basic concepts and theoretical perspectives in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and then will critically engage with applying them on Middle Eastern societies through case studies. Hence, the course will equip students with a critical understanding of a range of methodologies and theoretical frameworks employed in the study of gender as applied to research on Middle Eastern societies.
