This course introduces the forms of social distinctions and inequalities in societies in South Asia. It examines the specific issues of caste, class, gender and social kinship, and their complex entanglements with religion in urban and rural contexts. It draws on critical debates and ethnographies of the region, as well as films (including documentary footage) and fiction (e.g. Dalit stories).
