HFMK03511U Film theory and analysis: Film, TV and digital visual narratives

Volume 2019/2020
Education

Master in Film and Media Studies, 2019-curriculum

Content

The module is an introduction to and discussion of key theories of film and other audiovisual narratives, and to concrete analysis of their expressions in different historical, current digital and cultural contexts. The focus is on various narrative formats and genres, including feature films, serial forms and short formats on various platforms as well as interactive narratives (e.g. computer games). Similarly, we will analyze fictional paratexts (e.g. trailers, video essays, behind the scene footage) and different transmedia storyworlds. The course aims to increase the students understanding of and ability to reflect upon given theories, their assumptions and their consequences for the analysis, and to characterize and understand differences and similarities between theories. The module also works with either Ignit or video essays as a special communication genre and audiovisual short form as a way to analyze fiction narratives. We will also work with written analysis of audiovisual works in their different contexts related to genre, institutions and cultural history, including Danish (and Scandinavian) film and television fiction. This includes the importance of the digital turn for current trends and changes in film, series and various short formats.
