HFMA03155U Modul 3: Short Films - an introduction to writing, directing and producing short films

Volume 2014/2015
Education
Master in Film and Media Studies
Content

This course will examine central technical and artistic aspects of filmmaking, concentrating on the art and craft of short-film storytelling. By studying cinematic principles, techniques and traditions we can improve our craft as filmmakers, but the real fuel of a filmproduction is the artists desire to create. The style of a film results from the choices of the artists that make it, so it’s not enough to know merely the tools of audiovisual storytelling; you must also have strong preferences of your own, on style as well as substance.

The students will write and produce short films of their own during the course. Students will be instructed in film craft and techniques, but at the same time will be encouraged to trust and follow their own ideas and creative urges. The literature is broad in scope - it includes pragmatic texts, aimed at inspiring and facilitating the student productions, but will also include more academic and philosophical texts that will encourage the students to consider the role of filmmaking and storytelling in our society and how it affects us as a species. The course is taught by writer and director, Andreas Thaulow.
