Volume 2015/2016
Education

Master in Philosophy

Content

The course aims to develop an in-depth understanding of Husserl’s mature transcendental phenomenology, through an intensive critical reading of his Die Krisis der europäischen Wissenschaften und die transzendentale Phänomenologie: Eine Einleitung in die phänomenologische Philosophie. Themes covered include Husserl’s conception of philosophy and phenomenology, the ways of performing the transcendental reduction, the nature of the transcendental ego, transcendental intersubjectivity, embodiment, culture, history and the ‘life-world’. Particular emphasis will be placed on the question of what kind of transcendental philosophy we find in Husserl’s late phenomenology. The course will also consider the extent to which Krisis can be seen as a Husserlian response to the challenges of Scheler and Heidegger and also discuss some of Husserl’s later critics including Foucault and Meillassoux

In addition to the main text, the course will also consider material from Husserliana XXIX and XXXIX (DieKrisis der europaischen Wissenschaften und die transzendentale Phänomenologie.Ergänzungsband. Texte aus dem Nachlass 1934-1937 & Die Lebenswelt. Auslegungen der vorgegebenen Welt und ihrer Konstitution.Texte aus dem Nachlass 1916-1937).

The course is a module in the specialization Phenomenology and Philosophy of Mind, but students not enrolled in that specialization are also very welcome.

In preparation for the first class, please read Moran’s Husserl’s Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology: An Introduction and Zahavi’s Husserl’s Phenomenology.
