HENK0390RU English - Free topic 18: Migrant Memory: Life-stories, Investigations, Pictures

Volume 2016/2017

‘Migrant Memory’ explores the subjective experience and representation of migrants from the 19th to the early 21st century through a series of contrasting, comparative case studies. Two questions frame the course. First, how were the lives of migrants represented in the past? Second, how has the contemporary figure of the migrant (asylum seeker, benefits scrounger, self-made entrepreneur, etc) been constructed historically, politically and aesthetically? Throughout we explore the sense-making procedures (talking, writing, filming), social networks (family, community, diaspora) and cultural resources (history, language, genres) used by migrants and their observers.
