In this course we will follow the contours and direction of American Poetry from its Puritan beginnings to the post-World War II period, examining literary traditions, movements and schools, intellectual currents and shaping forces and, of course, individual poets and poems. The poets to be studied will include: Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, Philip Freneau, Walt Whitman, Robinson Jeffers, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, W.C. Williams, Marianne Moore, and others.
