A study of Melville’s ‘whale of a book’ in terms of our contemporary understanding of the history and consequences of the whaling industry, not only as undertaken in New England but also in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Apart from introducing students to one of the most formidable works of world literature, the purpose of this elective is to build on the focus in LICH 1 on 'literature and ecology’ and to encourage students to think historically about concerns often thought to have emerged only recently.
Herman Melville, Moby-Dick (1851). This work, of almost one thousand pages, will be at the centre of the course and will be studied intensely; we will also read the Book of Jonah from the Hebrew Scriptures, Heathcote Williams' Whale Nation (1988), Philip Hoare's Leviathan or, the Whale (2008), and assorted excerpts from writings of ecological and cetological relevance.
