Content

The #MeToo movement highlights the fact that American women have become more visible than ever before and that they intend to stay visible in the face of hell or high water, as my mother used to say. This course examines the rise and fall and rise of women’s movements in US history in order to understand the contours of progress and reaction in social, economic, and political ways. We will look at what has changed and what remains the same in women’s lives as we put women and female perspectives at the center of US history. Class, race, gender, and the facts of historical time add complexity to the issue, divide women between the privileged few and struggling many, and show emphatically that the war between and within sexes and gender roles is highly nuanced.
