HENB01391U English - Elective 2, topic 1:Language and culture in organisations

The course introduces students to linguistic anthropology, a field which focusses on the importance of language for an understanding of culture and society. With a focus on language as social action, the course covers key theories within multilingualism, language and power, language ideologies and language and identity. The theory will be related to cases drawn mainly from organisational contexts, covering topics such as the role of humour in establishing team culture, language socialisation in the workplace, linguistic diversity and language policy, and language and gender at work. The course also introduces students to the central methods of linguistic anthropology, including participant observation and the recording of interaction. Students will have the opportunity to collect their own data and analyse it using the theories and methods of linguistic anthropology as part of the course assessment.
