HEGRFÆLTVU FÆL Free Topic: Jews in Europe, the historical background and today’s realities – introductory course (Elective MA/BA)

Volume 2021/2022
Content

This is the introductory course of the project running in four European universities of the 4EU+ titled “Jewish identities in Changing Europe: Challenges, Problems and the Burden of the Past” (project time-frame: academic year 2021/2022) that brings together various lecturers from the best European universities and with different areas of expertise, ensuring a multifaceted introduction to the topic of Jewish past and identity across Europe. Through active learning and a deeply interdisciplinary approach, the course intends to guide students to acquire theoretical knowledge and tools in order to answer the following questions: how the past and present experiences affect the self-identity of EU citizens of Jewish origins? How these experiences affect their Jewish, national, and European self-identity? How these communities exercise their minority-based rights? What kind of support and obstacles they encountered? How they have undergone the processes of generational and cultural transformation and migrations? What is at present the extent of anti-Semitism in selected countries? How selected societies incorporate the experience of the Holocaust into their historical and cultural memory?

4EU+ PROJECT DESCRIPTION

One of the main goals of this introductory course is to prepare selected students to participate in the further stages of the 4EU+ project titled “Jewish Identities in changing Europe: Challenges, Problems and the Burden of the Past”. In the frames of this project, students will travel to partner universities (starting from February 2022) and participate in their activities; they also will visit and interact with local Jewish institutions and activists, in order to conduct interviews (in-person or online) with representatives of Jewish communities. After a general discussion and individual re-elaboration, results would be published. The students from the UNIMI, UCPH, and UW participating in the project will meet in April-May 2022 at an international student conference in Warsaw, to present their interviews and visit Jewish institutions in the Polish capital. Costs of students’ participation in the project (related to travels to partner universities) will be covered by the 4EU+ Alliance.

The successful attendance and active participation in the course “Jews in Europe, the historical background and today’s realities – introductory course” is strongly suggested for students that are planning to participate in the whole project. The course is also open to other students (BA, MA, Ph.D.) interested in Jewish history and other topics covered here.

The obligatory and optional readings will be discussed during the first lecture of the course.

Lectures will be online, registered, and later made available on the course website. Students who cannot attend will be therefore able to see the lectures later in the week. A maximum of three absences is allowed.
