Content

While Northeast Asia’s economic development is quite a remarkable story in the 20th and 21st century, its intra-regional reconciliation has yet to be realized. The region in fact still suffers from the lingering legacy of the early 20th century and the Cold War.  Two Koreas, Japan and China have not yet overcome the historical legacies from the remote and recent histories. They still quarrel over the territorial and historical disputes. Historical memories, nationalism, identities play dauntingly important factors in shaping the regional politics of the region. Moreover, reconciliation in the Korean peninsula between the North and the South still remains to be realized while two Koreas are trying to maximize its national security. This course deals with the politics of reconciliation between Korea and Japan, Japan and China, and North Korea and South Korea. It will start from the role of apology in international relations, trust in building confidence measures, and reciprocity in initiating cooperation. Then, we will move on to the actual case studies in Korea-Japan, Japan-China and Two-Koreas.

This course will consist of a combination of lectures, written assignments, student presentations and discussions.
