AANA18102U CANCELLED: Geographies of Governance, Development, and Mainstream Feminism

Volume 2018/2019
Content

This course examines global gendered governance from above, below, the margins, and across borders. Specifically we explore emerging geographies of elite gender experts in the contemporary era of neoliberal globalization:  How are gender experts - working within and across corporations, think-tanks, NGOs, and the State - entering into new partnerships to govern gender relations? What is gender expertise and what are the effects of its application in areas in the global south - such as development, sustainability, business, sexual violence, and security? How is gendered expertise produced and reproduced in elite transnational encounters and urban spaces? What are the practices of future foresight in global organizations to advance knowledge that make up the basis of scenarios and models for the future governance of gender equality? How does knowledge about gender equality circulate across institutional, national, and political borders? How is it that mainstream feminism is becoming part of these increasing complex cultural circulations about gender? And what kind of feminism is this anyway?

This course will examine literatures on globalization and gendered global governance; anticipatory governance and future foresight; gender in development studies; gender and elite geographies of power; and the professionalization of feminist knowledge and expertise. We will also bring a critical feminist lens to works on the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles; the World Bank’s efforts on gender and development;; The World Economic Forum’s Women leaders and Gender Parity Programme; and especially specific gender focused initiatives in Denmark.
