Content

Following the course will enable the student to understand:

economic valuation of life and health; approaches o the economic valuation of health; the methodology and theoretical backgrounds of the various health analysis approaches; how the different analysis approaches are used.

The various approaches to economic evaluation of health compare the benefits of a health intervention to its cost. We shall focus on comparing health interventions with benefits measured in a one-dimensional scale to status quo and to other interventions; and to compare health interventions with benefits (utility) measured in units of a cardinal utility function with status quo and other interventions; and also to compare interventions, where benefit is measured in money units.

Theoretical background of the above; Applied use of CBA, CEA and CUA.

BA econ, BA scient san publ or similar. Beneficial trade-off from courses on courses such as economic principles and/or health economy.
Commitment paper, presentations and final paper must be in English! Introduction (one day); presentation of topics (one day); students presentation of topics (one day) (slideshows); commitment paper; during writing process supervision (one day);. students presentations of seminar papers with students as moderators; writing process, handing in final seminar paper for examination.
Schedule:
Program: Wednesdays from 8-10 the following days:
- September 7: Intro, presentation of participants and of idea catalogue to thesis subjects.
- September 14: Participants presentation of project titles and ideas. Discussions and - feedback.
- September 21: Presentation of health economic analysis and curriculum by associate professor. Writing process initiated.
- October 12: Questions and supervision of students.

Presentations: Wednesdays from 8-13
November 16: Presentation and critical evaluation of student 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
November 23: Presentation and critical evaluation of student 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
November 30: Presentation and critical evaluation of student 13, 14, 15, 16 and postponed students.
All students must be participating at all days of presentations.

A written seminar paper in English.
Exam registration requirements

Attendance on the seminar. The mandatory commitment paper and seminar paper have been handed in at deadline.Included in the seminar is an oral presentation for the others participans at the seminar.

Re-exam

According to the Curriculum the form of the re-sit exam has been changed from September 1, 2016 to a “Written seminar re-sit paper” of 7,5 ECTS within the same subject area as the seminar. There is no longer an oral exam and an earlier non-passed seminar paper cannot be used as a re-sit paper.

Criteria for exam assesment

The student must in a satisfactory way demonstrate that he/she has mastered the learning outcome of the course.
