The purpose of the Human Biology internship is to allow students to gain experience in high level laboratory work in research departments, preferentially in companies or hospitals. This experience must be an addition to the experience to be gained in the master's thesis work. Accordingly, the internship must be at a physically different location than where the student's master master thesis project is carried out. Also, either the employed research methods or the research perspectives muist distinguish itself from the master thesis project. The overarching purpose of the internship is to give the student knowledge of the assignments and conditions at workplaces relevant to the MSc in Human Biology. 

Students must themselves find an internship organization. The organization should preferentially be a company or a hospital, but academic institutions are also eligible for internships. Internships must be pre-approved by the course responsible on the basis of an application with a project description and approval of the supervisor.

Learning Outcome

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Knowledge, skills and competencies:

  • Account for new skills acquired during the internship
  • Describe the assignments and conditions encountered during the internship and reflect on their internship experience, utilizing the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired during the programme.
  • Reflect on their experience as a research group member in a specific organization
  • Reflect on how Human Biology competencies fit into the context of the organization and how they contribute to an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Training in cooperation in a setting preferentially outside the university.
- Passed exams in at least 30 ECTS of the mandatory exams.
- An internship contract signed by all relevant parties: A written agreement between the student, the faculty supervisor and the host company/hospital where the internship is to take place.
No formal lectures.
Students will draw on the learning methods they have acquired in previous courses and practical work, but at this stage integrated and applied on concrete working situations with companies or hospitals.

Maximum number of pages for the project assignment:
10 ECTS = 10 pages (2400 keystrokes per page)

Number of hours for supervision including supervisor’s preparation:
10 ECTS points = 4 hours

The project placement is worth 10 ECTS, requiring 200 pages of literature. Alternatively, the literature may be determined by the number of references. In this case, 20 references are required for 10 ECTS.
In principle the same texts may not be submitted for more than one examination. However, there are cases in which it makes sense: for example in the case of fundamental theoretical texts or when texts and data are used in different ways in different disciplines. If doubts arise the head of study will determine whether using the same texts for more than one exam is reasonable.

Criteria for exam assesment

To achieve the maximum grade of 12, the student must be able to:

  • Describe the type of work/project carried out during internship, including the conditions thereof.
  • Account for new skills and knowledge acquired during the internship.


Skills and competencies:

  • Explain and discuss the knowledge and competencies within human biology that the student has used in connection with the internship.
  • Draw perspectives of present work for future career and practice, including for research.
