MSc in Global Health - elective summer course
MSc in Public Health Science - elective summer course
With point of departure in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to health and wellbeing of humans and the planet, students in this summer course will work in multidisciplinary teams to come up with solutions to global health challenges. The challenges are provided by external public and/or private partners, e.g. international organisations working to advance the SDG agenda. The course is part of an international SDG summer course alliance that enables students to create solutions for the SDG goals. Selected teams will have the possibility to present their solution at an international SDG challenge.
The overall aim of the course is to strengthen university students’ competencies to propose solutions to real-world global health related challenges through a combination of academic skills and interdisciplinary and innovative thinking. Students collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to develop and present their solutions to specific case questions provided by external public and/or private partners.
Before the students meet on campus, they must have completed a 20 hours online course element consisting of lectures and mandatory readings on SDGs, methodological and analytical approaches and case specific topics. Furthermore, students are required to perform individual investigations, and a small assignment.
The on-campus element of the course includes four successive full working days in Copenhagen where the students work in teams to come up with solutions to be presented to and receive feedback from a panel of examinators on the fifth day. This session will be followed-up with peer feedback. During the on-campus part of the programme, the students will receive focused lectures on case related topics and participate in workshops on e.g. problematization, feasibility, innovation and pitching. Underway, each team will also be given feedback from relevant resource persons.
After the course, all students will hand in an individual reflection assignment (7 hours workload).
On completion of the course, students should be able to:
Knowledge:
Demonstrate knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals
Demonstrate knowledge about the complexities incl. existing forms of problematizations in terms of e.g. equity and social justice of the selected global health challenge
Identify the various stakeholders involved in the selected global health challenge
Understand the principles of innovation, entrepreneurship and feasibility
Understand the principles of effective communication
Skills:
Identify, assess and integrate facts and data relevant to the case into the solution
Integrate considerations of the complexities incl. existing forms of problematizations into the solution
Apply innovation and problem-solving methods
Co-create and communicate in a multidisciplinary and international context
Create a feasible solution
Pitch the ideas persuasively
Competencies:
Integrate multi-disciplinarity into the design of innovative solutions
Recognise and network with stakeholders from various sectors
Plan and develop interventions in a multidisciplinary team
Some preparatory resources will be made available in the online course room. In addition the participants are requested to investigate and identify selected extra resources.
Each participant will be requested to produce and share a small assignment online before they meet.
The first day on-campus includes a series of interactive lectures on the overall case challenge theme, release of the case question, and approaches on how to generate, develop and present ideas.
The following three days will be devoted to group work to develop solutions and presentations supported by one common workshop and a series of one-on-one coaching sessions on pitching underway. Also resource persons will be available to give feedback to each team.
On the last day on-campus, the groups will pitch their solutions and receive feedback from a panel of examinators. Afterwards there will be a session where there will be room for peer-to-peer comments and discussions. Finally to complete the course each participant is requested to produce a short reflection report to be submitted no later than one week after the course that will release the credits subject to approval.
