MSc in Public Health - elective course

MSc in Health Informatics - elective course

MSc in Health Science - elective course

MSc in Human Biology - elective course

MSc in Global Health - elective course

Content

The course is an introduction to the field of pharmacoepidemiology. Pharmacoepidemiology bridge the fields of clinical pharmacology and epidemiology by investigating use and effects of drugs in large study populations. The course will go through the most used methods study designs and data sources, including the Danish National Prescription Registry. At the course we will work with designing and planning of pharmacoepidemiological studies. We will further critically review literature within different areas of pharmacoepidemiology. At the end of the course, we will combine the gained knowledge to write a project proposal for a pharmacoepidemiological study.

Learning Outcome

After completing the course, the students are expected to:

Knowledge

  • Account for the most used pharmacoepidemiological methods, data sources, and study designs.
  • Read and appraise scientific literature regarding pharmacoepidemiology

Skills

  • Identify strengths and limitations in pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Critically evaluate used data sources
  • Communicate and present findings from pharmacoepidemiological studies

Competencies

  • Design and assess pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Appropriately interpret epidemiological data within pharmacoepidemiology
  • Write a proposal for a research project within the area of pharmacoepidemiology

Criteria for exam assesment

The assignment is expected to fulfill the formal requirements for a research project proposal.

To achieve the grade 12, the student must be able to:

Knowledge

  • Describe and justify a scientific problem within pharmacoepidemiology
  • Describe a detailed study design of a pharmacoepidemiological project that addresses a scientific problem
  • Describe the feasibilities of a pharmacoepidemiological study

Skills

  • Identify scientific problems in health care that can be answered with pharmacoepidemiology

Competencies

  •  Design and assess pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Appropriately interpret epidemiological data within pharmacoepidemiology
