The topics are: Formation and reactions of enolates; Stereospecific aldol-additions; Chiral auxilaries; Reduction of organic funtional groups; Pericyclic reactions including click-chemistry; Rearrangements; Fragmentations; Radical reactions including carbenes; Methods for the resolution of racemic mixtures: Classical resolution, enzymatic resolution and methods for determination of optical purity; Transition-metal catalyzed reactions including cross-coupling reactions; Stereospecific aldol-additions; Chiral auxilaries; Pericylic Aromatic substitution  reactions; Oxidation reactions including click-chemistry; Rearrangements; Fragmentations; Radical reactions including carbenes; Microorganisms and enzymes in synthesis; Methods for the resolution of racemic mixtures: Classical resolution, enzymatic resolution, spontaneous resolution and methods for determination of optical purity; Microfluidics in synthesis; Solid-phase supported reagents for synthesis; Case stories from the medicinal industry: What is an invention? Scalability problems.and reagents; Patents and how to use the patent literature.

Learning Outcome

 

Competencies
Be able to analyze a complex synthetic problem and plan a feasible synthesis.
Be able to analyze scientific papers and patents dealing with synthetic problems and be able to spot inconsistent claims.


Skills
Apply the aquired knowledge on organic synthesis on a given target molecule. Be able to translate known methodologies to new problems.

Knowledge
Have an in depth knowledge of modern synthetic organic synthesis according to the content of the course.

Basic competencies physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, inorganic chemistry are necessary and intermediate competencies in organic chemistry and organic synthesis  are necessary (equivalent to KemiO and (Vid)OrgSyn).

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.

The exam is an oral examination based on one of the take-home assignments chosen randomly (by lot). There is no preparation time
Exam registration requirements

There are in total 10  take-home assignments during the course, which will have to be approved in order to take the exam. In addition there are two compulsary external lectures during the course. Participation in at least 80% of the lectures is required for admission to the exam.

The re-examination is also an oral examination based on one of the take-home assignments chosen randomly (by lot).
