NIGK14022U Sedimentary Basins - Evolution, Environments and Resources (part 2)

Volume 2020/2021
Education

MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience

Content

The course addresses the practical analysis of the sedimentary record to decipher the formation and evolution of a selected sedimentary basin (chosen by the course responsible). The aim of the course is to build on and refine the learning outcome of part 1 of the course. Part 2 of the course is focused on hands-on experience through field-work and analyses of real data which may include outcrop data, seismic profiles, well logs, and cores from a selected basin, backed up by key literature. There will be a strong emphasis on practical applications of the theoretical basis of basin analysis which was the key subject of part 1.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

Practical analysis of sedimentary basin fills based on real data and key literature.

Fundamental techniques and methodologies relating to the analysis of a selected sedimentary basin.

Formation and evolution of a selected sedimentary basin.

Application aspects of methods used and cases studied.

Potential for resource exploitation in selected sedimentary basins.

Key aspects of scientific writing and reporting.

Skills:

Analyse and interpret the fill of sedimentary basins by the application of real data which may include outcrop data, seismic profiles, well logs, and cores.

Plan and conduct field work to collect relevant data for the analysis of the fill of a selected sedimentary basin.

Describe resource exploitation aspects related to a selected sedimentary basin.

Write a concise, scientific report and prepare an oral presentation.

Competences:

Synthesize the geological evolution of selected sedimentary basins based on the analyses of real data.

Relate the synthesis to existing literature.

Evaluate the potential for resource exploitation in a selected sedimentary basin.

Communicate comprehensive understanding of a selected case or topic through oral presentation and a concise, scientific report.

Please see Absalon course page.

BSc in Geology-Geoscience or equivalent is recommended. In order to participate students should have a knowledge corresponding to that obtained in Sedimentary Basins - Evolution, Environments and Resources (part 1).
The form of teaching is theory exercises combined with ad hoc lectures and a field trip. The field trip takes place in the week prior to the block start. For the teaching plan, please see Absalon.
Students shall pay for their own travel to and from the field-work area, as well as entry visa (if required), vaccinations (if required) and personal medicine (e.g.malaria medication) and 125 DKK per day for food and lodging. For outside DK destinations the students are required to take out a private illness and repatriation insurance covering the field period.
