Modern Culture and 4 cities


This course explores the cultural history of urbanism and architecture and the way in which they manifest in film, art, and literature.


We will address themes such as:

  • Reading architecture and urban plans
  • Experiencing the city through filmic methodologies
  • Speculative cities
  • Caring cities
  • Gender and architecture
  • Just CITIES
  • Mobility and infrastructure
  • Cities of visibility
  • Scale
  • Domesticity – The Urban Home


The course is taught by Associate Professor Kristin Veel and involves guest lectures by experts in the field.


Students at the University of Copenhagen can follow this course as part of the “Kandidattilvalg i Urban Kultur” (  which also includes Henrik Reeh’s course on Urban Cultural and Cultural Theory”. It is offered in English as part of the European MA “4 CITIES” ( Lectures as well as seminars mixes international and KU-students and provides Danish-speaking students with an opportunity to practice academic English in the classroom.


Exam can be in English or in Danish.

The course is composed of a lecture (Thursday) and the class is subsequently divided into two seminar groups (Friday) every week. The seminar provide time for student presentations that, in turn, generate material for the written exam to be handed in at the end of the semester.
