Kursusindhold

What is the role of Islam in Middle Eastern politics?

This seminar will investigate state-religion relations, the clerical class, religious political movements, the debate about religion and mediated religion in the Middle East, with a strong focus on the dominant religion, Islam.

Islamism, Salafism, Jihadism, Sufism and other trends within Sunni and Shia Islam are often poorly understood in Western media. The course will discuss their definitions and address their role in the contexts of  modern Middle Eastern history and current affairs.
