Course Description:

This course is an interdisciplinary introduction to Korean culture from the "opening" of Korea in the 19th century up to today. We will travel chronologically through Korean history with a changing disciplinary focus. 

Intended Learning Outcomes:

1. Students will build a robust knowledge fundament of Korean culture, including insights into multiple disciplines: history, literature, film, historiography, geography, anthropology, sociology.

2. Students will be able to write an academic essay, including:

- finding and critical reading of academic literature

- identifying and solving problems

- giving and receiving feedback

- asking questions (use the guest talks!)

Academic targets

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding of

The historical, political, economic, social and cultural development of Korea.

The contexts in which knowledge about Korea’s development is produced.

 

Skills in

Communicating knowledge about Korea’s history.

Communicating in writing at a scholarly level with references to scientific texts and correct use of references and bibliographies.

Analysing stereotypical prejudices that tend to dominate the understanding of Korea, often related to approaches based on orientalism.

 

Competencies in

Finding and critically evaluating information on aspects of Korea’s history and culture

Communicating knowledge of Korea’s history and culture in accordance with academic standards.

 

Syllabus

The examiner specifies a syllabus of up to 625 standard pages.

 

Teaching and working methods

Class instruction with active student participation, e.g. in the form of student presentations and group presentations.

 

Exam provisions

 

Form of exam: Oral exam (optional subject) with material, following approval of active participation.

Active class participation consists of:

75% attendance.

Oral presentation of approx. 7 min.

Scope: 30 minutes, including grading. No preparation time is given.

The material consists of a process assignment of 4–6 standard pages.

Assessment: Internal exam with multiple examiners with assessment based on the 7-point grading scale. The process assignment is weighted 2/3 and the oral exam is weighted 1/3.  Both parts must be assessed as passed for the exam to be passed.

Active class attendance must be approved by lecturer.

Regulations for group exams:  The examination may only be taken individually, but the material may be prepared in groups.

The following applies to material written as a group exam: 2 students: 8-10 pages. 3 students: 12-14 pages.

Exam language(s): Danish or English.

Permitted exam aids: The submitted material and the synopsis may be brought to the oral exam.

Make-up exams/resits and exam taken when active class participation is not approved: 

Form of exam: Oral exam on optional subject with material.

The material consists of a paper of 9–11 standard pages. The material is weighted 2/3 and the oral exam is weighted 1/3. Both parts must be assessed as passed to pass the exam.
