Content

The course offers a review of China’s unique combinations of geographical, ethnic and linguistic factors and some of the most important historical, political, social and cultural developments in China. The course will focus on the following topics thematically and diachronically: Revolution, politics, society, agriculture, nation making, education, philosophy, religion, literature and other cultural manifestations. Emphasis is on historical trends that lead to the formation of modern China. An additional focus is the changing views of China as well as China’s changing views of its own position in the world.

The course will also introduce the students to academia, the humanities and academic writing

Academic targets

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of

China’s geography and demography and key political, economic, social and cultural developments in relation to their historical context.

  • Skills in

Explaining and analysing unreflected assumptions and stereotypes that colour attitudes to China, such as eurocentrism.Communicating at a basic scholarly level, particularly in relation to referencing sources and editing bibliographies based on author-date documentation (as in The Chicago Manual of Style).

  • Competencies in

Finding, structuring and critically evaluating information on a topic related to China’s history and culture.

 

Syllabus

The written take-home assignment is based on 625 standard pages of scientific literature of which a minimum of 300 pages is set by the examiner.

For the make-up exam/resit, however, the assignment is based on 625 standard pages of scientific literature set by the examiner.

Teaching and working methods

Compulsory class instruction with lectures, active student participation and group presentations.

Exam provisions

Form of exam: Active class participation.

Active class participation is defined as:

At least 75% attendance.

1 oral group presentation (approx. 25 min.) during the semester.

1 set written take-home assignment of maximum 5 standard pages where the research question and bibliography have been approved in advance. At least 4 weeks will be given to the assignment.

Assessment: Internal exam with one examiner, Pass/Fail.

Regulations for group exams: This exam can only be taken individually

Exam language(s): Danish or English.

Permitted exam aids: All.

Make-up exam/resit: Written exam, set subject. 6 hours. No exam aids are permitted.

Special provisions: Make-up exam/resit: The written assignment consists of an essay in response to questions posed by the examiner concerning Chinese history, culture and society including references and bibliography.
