Content

A review of the most important political, social and cultural developments in modern China based on China’s unique combinations of geographical, ethnic and linguistic factors. Classes will be conducted as lectures (Thursdays) and student presentations and discussions of various topics and source material (Fridays).

The course will focus on the following topics thematically and diachronically: Revolution, politics, society, agriculture, nation making, education, philosophy, religion, literature and other cultural manifestations.

Emphasis is on historical trends that lead to the formation of contemporary China. An additional focus is the changing views of China as well as China’s changing views of its own position in the world.

Syllabus

The written take-home assignment is based on Academic targets

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding of

The historical, political, economic, social and cultural development of China.

The conditions for producing knowledge about China’s development.

Skills in

Communicating knowledge about China’s history.

Communicating in writing at a scholarly level with references to scientific texts and correct use of references and bibliographies.

Analysing tacit assumptions and stereotypes that colour opinions in many accounts China, and which are described in theories about orientalism, sinologism, etc.

Competencies in

Finding and critically evaluating information on aspects of China’s history and culture

Communicating knowledge of China’s history and culture in accordance with academic standards.

 

625 standard pages of scientific literature of which a minimum of 300 pages is set by the examiner.

For the make-up exam/resit, however, the assignment is based on 625 standard pages of scientific literature set by the examiner.

Teaching and working methods

Compulsory class instruction with lectures, active student participation and group presentations.

 

Exam provisions

Form of exam:  Take-home assignment, set subject, following active class participation.

Active class participation is defined as:

At least 75% attendance.

One set oral group presentation during the semester (approx. 7 min.).

Hand-in consisting of a bibliography as defined and approved by the examiner during the course.

Scope: 4-5 standard pages. 2 days are given for completion of the assignment.

Assessment: Internal exam with a one examiner, the 7-point grading scale. Active class participation is approved by the lecturer.

Regulations for group exams: This exam can only be taken individually. However, the oral presentation must be carried out in groups (max. 4 students), with individual approval.

Exam language(s): Danish or English.

Permitted exam aids: All.

Make-up exams/resits and exam taken when active class participation is not approved: Written exam, set subject. 6 hours. Internal exam with a one examiner, the 7-point grading scale.

Regulations for group exams: This exam can only be taken individually.

Permitted exam aids: None.

Special provisions: Make-up exam/resit and exam taken when active class participation is not approved:  The written assignment consists of an essay in response to questions posed by the examiner concerning Chinese history, culture and society including references and bibliography.

 

For students who have not taken or passed the exam, the approved active class participation is no longer valid after the end of the exam period in ques-tion.
