Master in Film and Media Studies, 2019-curriculum


This course aims at offering students a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the digital and its complex interrelations with the social and the cultural. Keeping track of rapid change as well as continuity, answering new questions posed by datafication and artificial intelligence, or tackling digital inequalities requires us to continuously assess and update our theoretical and analytical tools. By discussing key theoretical and analytical frameworks, students will learn how to address complex questions at the intersection of digital media, technology, culture and society.


Our discussions will revolve around central research areas in the study of the digital: networks and social media, human-computer interaction, platforms and infrastructures, data, algorithms, visibility and (digital) inequalities. This encompasses topics such as the network society, slacktivism, memes, surveillance capitalism, the quantified self, social media influencers and data justice. Questions include: ‘do social media make us more social?’, ‘is privacy dead?’, ‘is data the new oil?’ or ‘do algorithms reinforce social inequalities?’.


At the end of the course, students will be able to provide a theoretically-informed answer to such questions. They will be able to discuss and critically assess key concepts and theories and to present their own theoretical framework to analyse an issue related to the digital.

Learning Outcome

At the exam, the student can demonstrate:


Knowledge of and understanding of

• the specific theoretical issues that have governed the conceptual development of film and media studies and its connection with technological, social and cultural changes

• the analytical implications of the use of different types of media studies concepts in relation to a wide variety of contexts, both historically and in the current media culture

• theories about digitisation and its influence on the conceptual development in media studies

• The connection between theory and method in relation to the analysis of film and media studies texts and communicative processes.


Skills to

• develop theoretical concepts and discuss these in both their historic specificity and in a number of contexts

• demonstrate the ability of theories, their possibilities and limitations, through exemplary analyses

• Understand the analytical problems in film and media studies that the digitization has raised

• critically evaluate conceptual use by means of comparative arguments.


Competences to

• explain theoretical concepts and demonstrate their analytical ability to explain different media and platforms

• Discuss theoretical schools in relation to each other and assess the analytical consequences associated with different theories

• apply the correct theory and methods it produces in relation to analytical intent, context and usage situation.

  • Approval of 2-3 oral or written exercises set by the lecturer (10-15 minute presentation or 3-5 standard pages per submission).
