This course uses thematic approaches to explore social change in the U.S. since 1945, with primary focus on the 1960s and 1970s. The aim of the course is to examine, understand, and explain the ideas, factors, and issues which encouraged a transformation from the conservative 1950s to the liberal 1970s. To uncover the social and attitudinal changes, students will explore the growth of consumer society and youth culture; the extension of rights to traditionally marginalized Americans; counterculture and permissive society; religion and reaction; and changing social policy. The War in Vietnam and the anti-war movement ties global, national, and individual aspirations together. The course is taught in two modules with Joe Goddard concentrating on the overall changes in the 1960s and 1970s and Russell Duncan focusing on the War in Vietnam and the Cold War.
