In this course students will be introduced to theories and methods that are useful for investigating multilingual and multicultural communication. The first half of the course focuses on culture and intercultural communication. Here students will work with different approaches to culture and intercultural communication, intercultural politeness and cultural cognition. The second half of the course focuses on multilingualism and linguistic diversity. Here students will work with lingua franca use, language policy, language and identity and language and migration. The course includes a focus on intercultural communication and linguistic diversity in organisational contexts. As part of the portfolio exam students will carry out an individual empirical project drawing on theories and methods from the course.

Ingrid Piller. 2017. Intercultural Communication: A Critical Introduction. 2nd Edition. Edinburgh University Press.
The course book will be supplemented by an online compendium consisting of research articles, handbook chapters and textbook chapters. All resources will be made available via Absalon before the course starts.
A 3-hour weekly seminar and workshops in weeks 43, 47 and 50.

- one 4-5-page essay in course week 5 (counts 25% of final grade) with peer feedback
- one 4-5-page essay in course week 9 (counts 25% of final grade) with teacher feedback
- one 13-15 page project assignment to be submitted with final portfolio (counts 50% of final grade). The project assignment has to be based on empirical data collection. The topic for this assignment can be chosen among the course topics and has to be approved by the teachers in course week 12 at the latest. - Exam registration requirements
