Presenting the Past: Anglophone History BASF/BATV
Exploring the history and growth of English-language culture, this course will employ relevant historical, political, cultural, and social debates and issues. Classes will explore fundamental societal themes, using appropriate theories and historical methods, including the role of primary and secondary sources, the importance of cause and effect, as well as contextual historical conditions across time. Employing interdisciplinary insights, it develops regional, national, transoceanic, and global perspectives. With pedagogy founded in problem-based group learning, the course examines and evaluates the use of varied sources in the construction and argumentation of historical narratives.
Scope
Presenting the Past follows the unlikely unfolding of the
Anglophone world to prominence from 1500 to 1945. Themes include
selections from: Rise of the Tudors; Fall of the Stuarts; New
World; Scientific Revolution; Atlantic Slavery; Voyages of
Exploration and Discovery; American Revolution; American Civil War;
American Westward Expansion; Nineteenth Century New York; Victorian
London; First World War; and Imperial Legacies. The themes become
increasingly global in nature as the course progresses, but with
roots in the passage of English from-one-among many European
tongues to global status. The themes taught reflect points of
continuity and change, both internally for each theme and across
the themes covered by the course.
While traditional careful readings of primary and secondary materials will be strongly represented, Presenting the Past will also use digital techniques —both to support this offering, and to develop your digital literacy. The course builds towards Current Perspectives in Modern Anglophone History and Culture in Semester 2.
The course will use a mixture of primary and secondary sources each week drawn from scholarly books and periodicals. Students will also use digital repositories and databases.
Assessment relies firstly on completion of a group free take home written paper (see SO, 2-5 students) and secondly that the written paper serves as a springboard for the group oral exam. Externally assessed.
