The class will focus on a research-based approach to promoting personal recovery and meaning making among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia disorders.
We will study a metacognition-based approach to the treatment of schizophrenia.
We will discuss the unique dilemmas, challenges and opportunities in the treatment of those diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The first part of the course focus on the theoretical and clinical definition of metacognition. We will train the coding of open interviews of clients with severe mental illness using the metacognition assessment scale developed by Paul Lysaker.
The second part focus on psychotherapy with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. We will study the values and the core elements of metacognition reflection and insight therapy. Subsequently, we will analyze case material and practice therapeutic interventions based on the metacognitive approach.
In the third part of the course, the students will choose an issue in the field of psychotherapy with clients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The students will present the issue in the class. The presentations will include an integration between theory, qualitative and quantitative studies and other relevant sources such as an interview they will conduct with a professional or an individual who was diagnosed with a severe disorder or media materials that will enrich the subject.

- Evidence-based knowledge of concepts, theories, and methods in metacognition-focused therapy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
Skills:
- Encode narrative discourse such as open interviews or therapeutic sessions according to the metacognition assessment scale.
- Formulate therapeutic interventions according to the core elements of Metacognition Insight and Reflection Therapy.
- Explore current issues in the field of psychotherapy with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
Competences:
- Assess current development in the study of psychotherapy research for psychosis spectrum disorders.
- Identify and discuss key dilemmas, challenges, barriers and opportunities in psychotherapy with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

The workshop will include theoretical learning and practice in small groups.
The third part of the course will be held on Zoom over 8 weeks on Wednesdays at 08.00 to 10.00, beginning 18.9.24.
This part will include further discussion of clinical material, including video presentations. Furthermore, the students will present their chosen issue and receive supervision and feedback from the teacher and fellow students.

Specify the exam:
• Literature Review: Students will write a literature review that focuses centrally on issues of metacognition or psychotherapy with clients diagnosed with schizophrenia.
• The review should include a title page, an abstract, and references. It should follow APA style. BA students can write a max of 8 standard pages, MA students can write a max of 12 standard pages (including abstract and in-text references)
Students will receive guidance throughout the course and some feedback on their ideas and plans for implementation during the second half of the course.
• Additional specifications are given when the course starts.

Criteria for exam assessment:
Grade 12 is given for an outstanding performance: the student lives up to the course's goal description in an independent and convincing manner with no or few and minor shortcomings
Grade 7 is given for a good performance: the student is confidently able to live up to the goal description, albeit with several shortcomings
Grade 02 is given for an adequate performance: the minimum acceptable performance in which the student is only able to live up to the goal description in an insecure and incomplete manner
