Content

Key aspects of landscape sustainability including dimensions of landscape change, resilience, character assessment, strategy making, collaborative planning, and governance regimes constitute the core of the course. Both theoretical approaches to landscape studies and policy and planning practices as they appear in different socio-ecological contexts will be covered during the lectures and seminars. During the course we will focus on new texts and practical cases of relevance to collaborative landscape governance. A framework for collaborative landscape strategy making will be presented and discussed in detail. Within 8 weeks after the one week session the student will submit an individual 2000-3000 word paper on a chosen subject closely related to rural landscape governance and as agreed upon during the course.

The participants will:

  • Get an updated overview of the literature on European rural landscape change and governances
  • Become familiar to basic concepts of landscape resilience
  • Be introduced to a comprehensive framework for collaborative landscape strategy making
Learning Outcome

On completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and competences as described below:

Knowledge:

  • Describe basic driving forces affecting European landscapes and how these intersect
  • Describe methodological approaches to landscape assessments
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the basic conditions for collaborative approaches to landscape policy and planning

     

    Skills:

  • Assess landscape problems relation to land use and management
  • Apply resilience and governance thinking to landscape studies
  • Apply collaborative strategy making approaches  to rural landscapes in relation to the institutional context, process dimensions and outcomes of landscape strategy making processes

     

    Competences:

  • Discuss landscape change and landscape sustainability in wider contexts
  • Bring own knowledge and skills in cooperation with others
  • Hold a critical and reflective view of landscape governance issues

The compendium will be made available by the end of June. The student should anticipate one week for readings before start

A BSc or BA of relevance to rural landscape studies is recommended.
The course will consist of a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. Texts and specific landscape cases provides the background for the seminars and workshops. A ½-day excursion is also built in the course. The student will write a paper of relevance to rural landscape change and governance and individual supervision is offered during the course.
