Content

This competence-line course teaches state-of the art research within the field of environmental soil science.

The course deals with the following subjects at a regional scale: soil in relation to the environmental and agricultural impacts e.g. nutrient circulation, soil organic carbon (SOC)-stocks and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • Geochemical and physical soil processes (CNS cycles) in relation to agriculture, environment and climate
  • Management options to mitigate anthropogenic and environmental impacts

Skills:

  • Read scientific literature related to the course subjects.
  • Use correct scientific definitions and terms.
  • Identify and select model-tools for stock assessments
  • Calculate SOC and GHG stocks and balances at local and regional scales

Competences:

  • Identify and work out proposal for solving complex geographical problems using theory, data and methods at local or regional scale.
  • Apply, evaluate and analyze methods, theories and data related to the course subjects.
  • Give short, concise and well-illustrated oral presentation on the basis of scientific papers.
  • Evaluate current soil inventory data based on own calculations and discuss deviations
  • Write a short, concise report
