Content
- The course presents the most important geophysical methods and their application to studies of planet Earth and of structures at all scales from lithosphere geophysics to near surface geophysics.
- Emphasis is on a thorough introduction to geophysical theory and method with the ambition that the students after the course will have sufficient knowledge to follow advanced courses in geophysics, participate in geophysical projects, and carry out independent interpretation of geophysical data, both in academic and mineral exploration domains.
- The teaching is held as lectures with substantial dialogue between the lecturer and students, and practical exercises where geophysical concepts are applied.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
- Principles of geophysical methods, such as seismology, reflection and refraction seismology, gravity, magnetics, and geothermics.
- Geophysical interpretation of structure and composition of the Earth at all scales.
- Understanding of physical processes in the Earth.
- Application of geophysical methods to exploration of hydrocarbon and mineral resources.
Skills:
- Understanding the current state-of-the-art physical methods for studying the Earth.
- General knowledge of the structure of the Earth.
- Information on which our present understanding of the Earth is based, including limitations.
- Appreciation of the relation between structure, physical properties, and dynamics of the Earth.
- Ability to assess which methods are suitable for solving geological and geophysical tasks, including hydrocarbon and mineral resources exploration.
- Ability to document results in written and oral presentation.
Competences:
- Account for the structure of the Earth;
- Have overview of the content of geophysical methods;
- Understand which physical parameters determine the results of geophysical measurements
- Be able to assess which geophysical methods may be suitable for solving specific geological and geophysical tasks, both in academic and in mineral exploration domains;
- Understand the importance of regional and local geological processes through interpretation of geophysical data;
- Communicate results by written and oral presentation.
Recommended Academic Qualifications
BSc in Geology-Geoscience,
including the two courses “Introduction to Solid Earth Geophysics”
and “Geophysics: Global Tectonics”or equivalent.
Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.
