NIGK14021U Sedimentary Basins - Evolution, Environments and Resources (part 1)
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
The course addresses theory and cases related to the formation, evolution, and analysis of sedimentary basins. Fundamental theoretical concepts are introduced and related to plate tectonics. Emphasis is placed on the sedimentary infill of basins, and aspects of exploration (principally for hydrocarbons) are addressed throughout. A topic or case relating to sedimentary basin theory is investigated in detail by the students and presented in a written report.
Knowledge:
Fundamental concepts and theory of sedimentary basin formation, evolution and analyses.
Basic plate tectonic framework controlling sedimentary basin evolution.
Key aspects of sedimentology, stratigraphy, and large-scale stratal geometries related to sedimentary basin evolution.
Aspects of exploration (principally for hydrocarbons) in sedimentary basins.
Skills:
Understand the fundamental concepts and theory of sedimentary basins.
Describe the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins within a plate tectonic framework.
Classify sedimentary basins within a plate tectonic framework.
Describe the large-scale stratal geometries and sedimentary successions relating to basin evolution. Describe aspects of resource exploration related to sedimentary basins.
Prepare a scientific report on a topic or case relating to sedimentary basins.
Competences:
Synthesize and communicate the relation between sedimentary basin filling history and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins.
Synthesize key aspects of resource exploration and relate them to sedimentary basin evolution.
Explain the fundamental concepts and theory of sedimentary basins.
Synthesize and communicate the key aspects of a topic or case related sedimentary basins, both orally and in a written scientific report.
