HEEK13082U Ethnological Specialization and Research Design
This course focuses on the central elements of thesis writing with the purpose of initiating and facilitating the thesis work. Participants in the course must select a (tentative) thesis topic to work with throughout, by way of portfolio assignments, group discussions, and presentations during classes. Feedback will be provided by peers and by the teacher.
The portfolio assignments comprise:
- A substantiated problem statement, including reflections about the cultural analytical/ethnological perspectives of the topic and approach (2-3 slides and oral presentation).
- A research review of relevant literature, including reflections on one’s own contribution/position in the field (5-9 pages), and a list of annotated references (at least 10).
- A list/sketch of empirical material and a description of its potentials, generation, and analytical themes (10-12 pages).
- A draft of the thesis contract, including problem statement and project plan.
The course is concluded by an oral exam on the basis of a synopsis (2-3 pages) and with the portfolio (15-20 pages in total) as an appendix. The synopsis must summarize the work so far, contain a (possibly revised) problem statement, and point to an onwards path (i.e. identify research questions, methodological approaches and analytical purchase).
At the exam students must reflect on choices and decisions, and plan for the next steps, preparing directly for the thesis writing. Students on the course will be consulted regarding class content, and will be expected to participate actively, both by completing assignments in due time, discussing them throughout and by providing peer feedback.
The teaching language is English, but Danish-speaking participants can write portfolio assignments (and possibly do group work) in Danish.
