JJUA55236U Disaster Law and Policy
The objective of the course is to provide students with a basic
understanding of the central legal and political issues surrounding
disaster management. Ranging from case-based national law and
policy-issues to global issues.
The course is divided in four overall sections, each consisting of
three elements, and an exam.
Knowledge:
- basic understanding of what a disaster is.
- ability to provide an overview of central concepts applied in disaster research.
Skills:
- able to analyse present disaster regulation and identify potential shortcomings
- able to account for the central problems in field across disaster management phases.
- able to identify a suitable academic problem
Competences:
- able to critically reflect upon present law’s effect for disaster risk
- divise and properly communicate the findings of a small research paper

The modus operandi, see above, is structured around student presentations, and recurring discussions. The students change between the roles as presenters, designated reviewers and critical audience throughout the course.

The course is very much based on feed-back both individual, collectively and through peers. The aim is to get the students to start writing early in the course, and insure continuous feed-back on the products made by the students.
