This course gives an almost exhaustive overview about Brazil today. The course structure follows a double didactical approach, which is applied simultaneously in each class:

One learning process is carried out through a teacher-centered presentation of a chronological panorama of Brazil from colonial times to now, with a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries.

The other learning process follows the method of problem-based teaching and gives the students the opportunity to design and develop in teams small research projects about a relevant topic of their choice, which is currently under debate in Brazil.

Guided by the teacher and using the more general knowledge built in parallel about Brazil as a whole, students tackle a specific problem in an interdisciplinary perspective and find out about the different actors and interests, the context and the history behind. Applying academic techniques, this project is turned into a research paper and handed in as final written assignment. During the past years students’ research projects have addressed a large variety of topics, such as  the division of private and public space in “favelas” and gated communities; women’s rights in relation to abortion; how to reform the political system; Afro-Brazilian cultural movements; football and identity; corruption and mass protests; the effects of public policies to reduce inequality; cattle ranching and sustainability in the Amazon; and the environmental impact of the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

Den godkendte aktive undervisningsdeltagelse er gyldig i pågældende eksamenstermin, hvor den er registreret, samt i den umiddelbart efterfølgende termin.

Den frie hjemmeopgave består af et udarbejdet teamprojekt (8-10 normalsider ekskl. bibliografi og evt. bilag) og en individuel logbog i sin endelige form (andet kapitel 3-5 normalsider).

Logbogen består af to dele. Den første del indeholder den studerendes egne notater og skal være løbende opdateret, mindst en gang om ugen. Logbogens anden del indeholder kritiske refleksioner over lærings- og tankeprocesser og skal udarbejdes to gange (midtvejs i semesteret og efter skrivning af projektet).
Refleksionerne skal være på velformuleret akademisk prosa. Det andet kapitel skal i sin endelige version have et omfang på 3-5 normalsider.

Written assignment
Prøveform: Fri hjemmeopgave under forudsætning af aktiv undervisningsdeltagelse.
Bedømmelse: Der gives én karakter. Projektet vægter 70 %, og logbogens andet kapitel vægter 30 % af den samlede bedømmelse. Aktiv undervisningsdeltagelse godkendes af underviseren.
Eksaminationssprog: Dansk eller portugisisk eller engelsk.
Gruppeprøve: Prøven kan aflægges som gruppeprøve (maks. 4 deltagere) med individuel bedømmelse. Deltagernes fællesbidrag må ikke overstige 50 %. Logbøger kan kun udarbejdes individuelt.
Omfang: 8-10 normalsider + logbogens andet kapitel (jf. Særlige bestemmelser) på 3-5 normalsider.
Ved 2 deltagere øges sideantallet med 50 %
Ved 3 deltagere med 100 %
Ved 4 deltagere med 150 %

Prøve ved ikke-godkendt aktiv undervisningsdeltagelse:
Prøveform: Bunden hjemmeopgave.
Eksaminationssprog: Dansk, portugisisk eller engelsk.
Gruppeprøve: Prøven kan kun aflægges individuelt.
Omfang: 7 dage; 11-15 normalsider.
Exam registration requirements

Den aktive undervisningsdeltagelse består af:  

  • Aktiv deltagelse i mindst 75 % af undervisningen 
  • 2 korte gruppepræsentationer om teamprojektet 
  • Individuel udarbejdelse af logbog undervejs i teamprojektet
