The course Reading and Working with Manuscripts provides the student with an introduction to codicology and paleography in the form of lectures and workshops. Gaining hands-on experience with real manuscripts from the Arnamagnæan Collection, the student will learn how to handle, describe and read medieval and early modern manuscripts from Iceland and Scandinavia.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe a medieval or early modern manuscript book in terms of its codicological features
  • Recognize and date various types of medieval and post-medieval scripts
  • Read and transcribe texts found in primary manuscript sources

In order to be admitted to the Master’s elective offered as summer courses in Scandinavian Manuscript Studies, the student must have completed a Bachelor's degree program. The student must have some background in Old Norse language and literature, e.g. a BA level course such as The Nordic languages in the Medieval Period (De nordiske sprog i middelalderen).
The student must have some background in Old Norse language and literature.
The student must be able to read texts in Academic English.
