This course examines the interaction of language with society and the individual and how language establishes power, ethnicity, gender, and social identity. In other words, it deals with the ways in which relationships and structures in society influence language each other. The course is intended to encourage students to think about language issues in their own lives and to help them establish positions in the light of the findings of previous research.
