The seminar is primarily for students at the MSc of Economics

Content

The objective of this seminar is for students to work on independent research projects related to International Trade. Students choose their topic in consultation with the seminar organizer, prepare and submit a first draft, give a presentation based on the first draft, and hand-in a revised and final version of the seminar paper for assessment.

Topics for the seminar paper include (but are not limited to):

  • Technology, geography and international trade
  • Structural gravity and quantitative models of international trade
  • Heterogeneous firms and international trade
  • Trade policy
  • Offshoring

  • Multinationals and foreign direct investments
  • Trade liberalization
  • Preferential trade agreements

Learning Outcome

Additional for the learning outcome specified in the Curriculum  the student should after completing the seminar be able to write independent research papers on a topic of their choosing. This challenges students to develop and test a hypothesis or an argument, think critically about a problem, gain comprehensive knowledge over a specific topic, engage in complex analysis, explore possible problem-solving options, advance the body of knowledge relevant to their topic, and enhance the clarity and precision of their writing.

BSc in Economics or similar
A basic knowledge of the theories and concepts from the elective course “International Economics” is strongly recommended.
Kick-off meeting, research and writing process of the seminar paper, sessions with presentation of own paper and critical evaluation/feedback to another student´s paper, actively participating in discussions at class.

Before the session a "so-finalized-as-possible"-version of the paper must be uploaded in Absalon. After the presentations, the student submit an edited version of the paper in the Digital Exam portal as the final exam paper. The aim is that students use the presentation sessions as an opportunity to receive and use the constructive feedback to improve the paper.
Schedule:
• Kick-off meeting: Week 36. Date to be made in agreement with the students.
• Two lectures: Week 37
• Deadline Research proposal/​commitmentpaper: September 21
• Deadline of pre-paper uploaded to Absalon: One week before presentations.

- a seminar paper in English that meets the formal requirements for written papers stated in the curriculum of the Master programme and at KUNet for seminars.

Attendance in all  activities at the seminar as stated in the formal requrements in the Curriculum  and at the  KUnet for seminars (UK)  and KUnet for seminars (DK)  is required to participate in the exam.

Criteria for exam assesment

Students are assessed on the extent to which they master the learning outcome for the seminar and can make use of the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the learning outcomes in the Curriculum  of the Master programme.

To receive the top grade, the student must with no or only a few minor weaknesses be able to demonstrate an excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material.
